We currently have several clients with spinal cord injuries. We understand the unique requirements of each patient, because no two spinal injuries are exactly the same. This is why we provide a customized care plan in conjunction with your case manager, social worker, doctors, physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist.
We understand that a sudden and traumatic blow to the spine that damages the associated nerves can result in a spinal cord injury. This damage means that important communication between the brain and the spine can no longer occur and will likely affect various muscles, both voluntary and involuntary. These injuries are quite serious and, depending upon the location of the injury, significant disabilities can result. Traumatic brain injury patients very often need help to care for themselves.
Select the Care You Need
These patients may often need mobility assistance from specialized devices such as a Hoyer lift, Spryte, or wheelchair may be required. We have Certified Nursing assistants and Certified Home Health Aides who are trained in these devices. We maintain a Hoyer lift in our office for training purposes.
These patients often experience respiratory issues, urinary tract infections, kidney stones and pressure or bed sores. They also experience bowel and bladder dysfunction. Though their injury is non-reversible, there are things that can be done to maintain their health and improve the quality of their lives.
- Maintain proper posture in their wheelchair or hospital bed
- Position the client regularly to prevent bed sores and congestion.
- Prepare nutritious meals to maintain their health and keep an ideal weight.
- Incontinence care
- Drink plenty of fluids to keep the body well hydrated and free from congestion.
- Remove and dispose of urinary bags
- Exercise reminders to keep the body using muscles and prevent atrophy
Almost half of those with spinal cord injuries will need help with personal care on a daily basis. They will need help with the activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, bowel and bladder care in addition to simply getting in and out of bed and around their homes. They will obviously need help in terms of errands, shopping and preparing meals, housekeeping and laundry. Furthermore, their needs may increase as they age and have less energy.

This is especially the case for the elderly who are often too frail to be moved successfully.
